The Holy Monastery of Philotheou

The Holy Monastery of Philotheou is dedicated to the Annunciation of the Theotokos. It was founded in 992 by Saint Philotheos, a disciple of Saint Athanasios the Athonite. Originally the monastery was named the Little Monastery of Fteris and was in a different location but it was moved to its current location already in the 11th century. Like all the monasteries of the Holy Mountain, also Philotheou has housed many saints (including St. Kosmas of Aitolos and St. Dionysios of Olympus), but in the modern era it is most well known for its abbot of 1973-1991, Archimandrite Ephraim of Philotheou and Arizona.
